The essentials for turning on the lights when you move here. See
Moving to Chattanooga for the full setup checklist.
- EPB (municipal) - electric and fiber internet in its service area.
It is the municipal power company, widely loved: reliable, with gigabit
fiber at some of the best prices in the country (base 300 Mbps $57.99/mo,
5 Gig $97.99/mo as of 2026). Check the exact address with
EPB's service-availability checker;
it accepts Georgia addresses too, so do not assume the state line decides
availability. Call ahead - install windows can be weeks out:
(423) 648-1372, 24/7.
- Base: standard residential rate.
- Night Shift: lower overnight rate from 11pm-5am.
- Time Shift: lower overnight rate, with a higher on-peak rate on
weekday afternoons/evenings or mornings depending on season.
- Levelized Billing: averages the prior 12 months and requires one year
at the current address; it has no annual true-up unless service ends or
you move.
EPB's current schedules and fuel adjustment are here:
EPB energy rates. The documented
terms do not support the Reddit claim that the portal automatically forces
Night/Time Shift customers onto Base, so that claim should not be added.
- Volunteer Energy Cooperative (VEC) - the electric cooperative serving
parts of the county outside the city (and much of surrounding counties)
(vec.org). VEC also offers fiber internet in some
areas, built in partnership with Twin Lakes; availability is
address-specific.
- Other providers: use TVA's Local Power Companies directory
to identify the local distribution utility, then confirm service with the
provider. There is no single current countywide electric-territory lookup;
do not assume the state line or city limits decide your provider.
- Cable internet alternatives: Comcast/Xfinity and
Charter/Spectrum serve parts of the region (plus AT&T DSL/fiber where
available). Availability depends on your exact address - EPB is not the
only fiber option, but it is not available everywhere either.
Who serves your water depends on your address. For a countywide orientation,
see the CHCRPA/TDEC water-provider map,
a Chattanooga-Hamilton County RPA layer derived from Tennessee Department
of Environment and Conservation data and updated in August 2026. It is a
planning reference, not an address-level service determination: call the
provider before assuming a connection.
Hixson Utility District publishes its own water service-area address
lookup.
The county's GISMO map
is useful for WWTA sewer infrastructure, but it does not establish which
provider serves an address.
- Tennessee-American Water (TAW) - the private water utility serving
Chattanooga and other Hamilton County communities; a subsidiary of
American Water. Contact: 1-866-736-6420 · amwater.com/tnaw.
- WWTA (Hamilton County Water & Wastewater Treatment Authority) - the
county's wastewater/sewer authority (not drinking water)
(wwta.hamiltontn.gov). It operates public
sewer infrastructure in parts of Hamilton County and nearby municipalities.
Sewer billing: (423) 209-7808 · wwta.hamiltontn.gov.

CUDA says its service area covers about 148 square miles across those
counties. It is a reminder that the state line is not a utility boundary;
confirm the exact address.
- Walker County: county government does not supply water directly. Its
current provider list includes Catoosa Utility, Chattooga County Water,
the cities of Chickamauga and LaFayette, Dalton Utilities, Tennessee
American Water, Walker County Rural Water, and Walker County Water &
Sewerage Authority (Walker County water providers).
- Dade County Water & Sewer Authority: 250 Bond Street, Trenton; (706)
657-4341; after-hours emergency (706) 657-6097 (mydadewater.com).
- Chattanooga Gas is the main natural gas provider in the city - it's
part of Southern Company Gas (since 2016)
(chattanoogagas.com).
Most neighborhoods with gas service are on the Chattanooga Gas system.
- Some areas have no gas mains at all and are all-electric (EPB) -
common in newer subdivisions. If you're buying, check whether natural gas
is available at the address before assuming.
- Propane (tanks) is an option for rural homes without mains - several
propane companies deliver (e.g. AmeriGas, local suppliers); it's
address-specific, so ask the seller/landlord.
- City pickup inside Chattanooga city limits.
- County/district service outside the city - contract a private
hauler or pay-per-bag at the landfill for drop-offs. See
Trash & Recycling for the full details
(curbside vs drop-off, the private haulers, the Birchwood Landfill bag
fee, and recycling centers).
Utility territories have exact address boundaries - always confirm with the
provider for your specific address.
